Interview of the month - May 2008

Cashmerecafe

How long have you been knitting?
I started knitting when I was 7-8 years old. That makes me a very old knitter – I know how to knit for 25 years. But I haven’t been knitting all this time, of course, I’ve had several long pauses.

Who taught you?
My mum, of course. She knit a lot and it was natural to me to learn how to knit. Not for my sister, though ;)

Do you have a favorite technique?
I like cables – they are so logical. But on the other hand can be very intriguing as well. My mother makes loads of lace – as a kid I always said to her (when she would make something for me): Please, don’t make me anything with holes (i.e. lace). So, when I started to knit the way I wanted, I guess, I chose cables, which are total opposite of lace.

Which material do you prefer?
I like wool combined with alpaca. Also I think it would be nice to knit something with cashmere.

What inspires you?
Other knitters whom I "meet" in blogosphere. When I see all those beautiful and imaginative project my fingers start to itch!

Tell us about something you've knit that you're really satisfied with! (A picture of said thing would be lovely, and if you want to tell us about more than one thing, that's fine too!)

This is a hard one J I have just re-started knitting after a long pause, so I feel there’s not much new to share. I am really satisfied with my "norwegian" pullover, which I made during my one-year stay in Southern Norway. It took very much time to finish it, so it was good to practice my patience. I like it also because it’s timeless – it’s so classical, that I believe it will never go out of fashion. But on the other hand – all Norwegian knitting is like that, isn’t it?

What does knitting mean to you?
It is a relaxation after a long day at work. I feel satisfied because I can make something with my hands and in the process I can think about all kinds of things, but more often, I just enjoy the image of the new garment.

Do you knit together with others on a regular basis?
Nope. I can’t talk or watch TV when I knit. I am so deeply concentrated in my thoughts I would be a useless knitting companion.

Do you work with knitting in any way, or is it a hobby only?
It’s just a hobby. In Slovenia a lot of people take it as a hobby for old, boring ladies. :-) That’s why I don’t talk much about it outside of the knitters-blogosphere.

Do you have a website and/or blog?
Yes, of course. You can find me at: http://cashmerecafe.wordpress.com
